Uudesta-Seelannista elokuussa 2020 lähtenyt, 5867 lehmää kuljettanut rahtilaiva Gulf Livestock 1 upposi Maysak-taifuunin iskiessä Japanin rannikolla 2.9.2020. Kaksi neljästäkymmenestäkolmesta miehistön jäsenestä pelastui. 41 ihmistä ja kaikki 5867 lehmää menehtyivät. Lehmät olivat noin 2506 euron arvoisia eli kokonaisuudessaan 14,7 miljoonaa euroa. Niiden oli määrä matkustaa merellä kahdenkymmenen päivän matka Kiinaan maitokarjaksi.
Toteutan Galleria 3H+K:ssa Porissa kymmenen päivää kestävän performanssin Homage to 5 867 Cattle.
Homage to 5 867 Cattle on katumusharjoitus, jossa muovaan kymmenen päivän ajan savilehmiä kunnioittaakseni rahtilaivaonnettomuudessa kuolleiden lehmien muistoa. Galleriassa minulla on 300 kiloa savea josta muovailen lehmät.
Asun ja työskentelen galleriassa 9.-18.5. Työskentelyäni voi tulla seuraamaan päivittäin klo 9-19 (tauko klo 13-14). Performanssissa syntynyt installaatio on esillä galleriassa 31.5.2026 saakka.
Performanssi alkaa avajaisissa perjantaina 8.5. klo 18. Lämpimästi tervetuloa!
BIO
Siina Levonoja on sastamalalaissyntyinen ja Helsingissä asuva kuvataiteilija (TaM). Levonojan monialainen työskentely rakentuu performatiivisista interventioista ja installaatioista ja kuvanveistosta. Hänelle läheisin media on poltettu ja polttamaton savi. Levonojan työt käsittelevät usein ihmisen ja muiden eläinten suhteeseen ja eläinetiikkaan liittyviä kysymyksiä. Levonoja valmistui taiteen maisteriksi Aalto-yliopiston (ARTS) Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) -ohjelmasta 2019. Hänen teoksiaan on mm. Suomen valtion taidekokoelmassa.

In August 2020 the container ship ‘Gulf Livestock 1’ departed from New Zealand carrying 5 867 dairy cows in it. By the time typhoon Maysak hit the Japanese coast and on the 2nd of September, the ship sank. Two of the 43 crew members were rescued. All of the 5 867 cows drowned. The cows were worth around 2 506 euro each, and 14,7 million euros altogether. The journey, destined to China, was meant to take 20 days.
Homage to 5 867 Cattle is a ten-day performance, located in the Gallery 3H+K, Pori.
Homage to 5 867 Cattle is an act of penance, where I sculpt clay cows for ten days in honour of the perished cows. I live and work in the gallery 9.-18.5. I have 300 kilos of clay from which I form the cows.
The audience is welcome to visit and see the evolving artwork daily 9:00-19:00 (lunchbreak 13:00-14:00). The installation created during performance will be on display until 31.5.2026. The performance starts in the opening on Friday 8th of May at 18:00. Warm Welcome!
BIO
Siina Levonoja is a visual artist who lives and works in Helsinki. Levonoja’s diverse practice includes performative interventions and installations and sculpture. The closest media to her is fired and unfired clay. Levonoja’s projects focus on cross-species encounterings and coexistence and human relation toward other animals. Levonoja graduated with an MA from Aalto University (ARTS), Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) in 2019.
