Societies with their webs of social norms and expectations are strange moulds of their own. We all are in processes of packing into them, and if not, we are somehow packed into them by someone else. The exhibition by Korpua inquires the event of packing into a mould in ways, where individuals or communities find their own unique ways of being in the world and imagine futures despite the pressure and pain created by the webs of norms.

In Maarit Verronen’s work Pimeästä maasta (1997) (en. From the Dark Land), the social norms have become physical moulds, where everyone needs to pack into every once in a while. Korpua plays with the idea of individuals squeezing into the moulds, and some finding their own place by doing tricks (fr. tour, Michel de Certeau, 1984). The aim of the tricks is to create space of one’s own and strengthen agency while seemingly being within the framework of the society. Some tricks succeed better than others, some worse.

The solo show is part of Korpua’s long-running project based on material emerged from discussions and observations about various tricks to survive or maintain agency. It presents a new series of oil painting and works exist somewhere between painting and collections of objects. The works do not capture the tricks, yet hint about them and keep them as their own knowledge. It is a task of the viewer to find them from the cracks in the moulds.

Totti Korpua (b. 1998 in Kiiminki) is a Helsinki and Oulu based artist and art educator, working in the range of painting, objects and social practice. They are interested in different ways of creating and imagining new and more sustainable and collective worlds, from which they aim to capture flickers through material based processes.
